Program Goals

This program is designed to improve clinical awareness of current recommendations for both carrier and newborn screening for fragile X syndrome (FXS). Historical and updated findings will be presented and discussed as they relate to benefits and challenges of population-based fragile X carrier screening.

Target Audience

Obstetricians/Gynecologists, Genetic Counselors, Mental Health Specialists, Laboratory Professionals, and those related healthcare professionals interested or involved in the clinical management of fragile x syndrome (FXS).

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:
  1. Specify the carrier frequency for fragile X syndrome (FXS).
  2. Define the general principles of a woman’s risk to her offspring.
  3. Explain three potential benefits of prenatal carrier screening for FXS.
  4. Identify three potential benefits of newborn screening for FXS.
  5. Evaluate the major concerns that have been expressed about widespread prenatal and newborn screening for FXS.
