Historical and updated findings concerning the syndrome and the causative recessive gene survival of motor neuron (SMN1) will be presented. The potential influence that SMN2 has on the severity of the disease progression will also be discussed. Carrier testing and prenatal diagnosis will be discussed along with considerations for population carrier screening.
